Product Update: Hair One Jajoba Packette for Color Treated Hair

I mentioned in my last post that I broke down and used a store bought product to get the remaining Henna out of my hair. I had a packet of Hair One Jajoba Packette for Color Treated Hair that I purchased when I was just starting my all-natural journey.

Here is the website's description of this product:
  • Sulfate Free
  • A natural approach to hair care
  • No damaging detergents or harsh chemicals
  • Cleans with an astringent and antibacterial properties
  • Formulated with natural herbs and oils

The ingredients do list a lot of "natural herbs and oils": Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Avocado Oil, Aloe Leaf Juice, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Coffee seed extract, etc

However, the fourth and fifth ingredients listed gave me pause.

Amodimethicone, an inorganic cationic polymer. Basically, it's a form of silicon that makes hair feel nourished. It is attracted to the driest and most damaged portions of the hair cuticle. It coats the hair shaft protecting it from thermal damage due to hairdryers and straighteners or curling irons. However, it is NOT water soluble. It would be necessary to use a shampoo containing one of the lauryl or laureth sulfates or cocamidopropyl betaine to completely remove this silicone from the hair, which may be of concern to those who prefer to use only conditioner-cleansing methods.

CID 157846 is also known as Behentrimonium methosulfate or Behenyl trimethyl ammonium methosulfate. I'm not sure how a product can contain a sulfate chemical and advertise itself at sulfate-free. Also, this chemical is listed as one of the "prohibited ingredients" by the Natural Products Association. (For what it's worth, you can check them out at www.npainfo.org)
